Over 590,000 flower bulbs are currently being planted by the Vienna City Gardens in more than 470 flower beds, so that spring can once again transform the parks into a colorful sea of blossoms.

With the arrival of autumn, there is much to do at the Vienna City Gardens. The colorful splendor of the summer flowers is slowly losing its intensity, and the city gardeners are beginning to remove the withered plants from the beds.

Over 590,000 Flower Bulbs Ensure a Colorful Spring

The beds are then prepared for the coming spring by planting fresh flower bulbs. These will surprise next year with an abundance of blooms and a variety of colors. In the Türkenschanzpark in Vienna-Währing, work is also being done on another blooming feature for next spring: A new crocus meadow is intended to serve as an early food source for insects.

"With the start of the autumn planting season, the Vienna City Gardens are laying the foundation for our city to bloom in full color again next spring. In the coming weeks, more than 690,000 flower bulbs will be planted. 100,000 of these are intended for a completely new wild crocus meadow in the Türkenschanzpark, which will especially benefit biodiversity," said Jürgen Czernohorszky, City Councilor for Climate.

Tulip Bulbs Covered with Brushwood for Protection

In the first weeks of autumn, more than 470 flower beds will be planted: Tulip bulbs, in particular, are being used extensively. To protect the sensitive flower bulbs, they are also covered with around 70 tons of brushwood after planting.

Flower beds, where tulip bulbs are already planted, are marked with small signs "Caution - bulbs sleeping here." This friendly request is directed at all passersby to ensure the flower beds remain intact and the tulips can grow peacefully.

New Crocus Meadow in Türkenschanzpark

This autumn, a new crocus meadow is also being created in Türkenschanzpark. Nearly 100,000 bulbs will be planted in a meadow that will add colorful highlights starting next spring. The crocuses also fulfill an important ecological function: thanks to their early blooming period, they provide food for insects even before other plants bloom. Once planted, the bulbs remain in the meadow and sprout again every spring.

Several Tons of Leaves in Vienna Every Year

In addition to maintaining lawns and flower beds, the Vienna City Gardens also manage the massive amounts of leaves from over 500,000 city trees. Every year, several tons of leaves fall - both from the approximately 100,000 street trees and from the trees in over 1,000 parks.

The 48ers are responsible for the disposal of street leaves, while the Vienna City Gardens take care of them in the municipal parks. A large portion of the collected leaves is taken to the city's composting facility in Lobau, where it is processed into high-quality compost. In large parks like the Green Prater, Kurpark Oberlaa, or Donaupark, the city gardeners follow a different approach: here, the leaves are partially worked directly into the shrub areas. This not only serves as a natural fertilizer but also supports soil building and nutrient supply for the plants.
