In September, household energy prices increased by 7.9 percent year-on-year. With an increase of 35.9 percent, electricity was once again a price driver, as shown by the Energy Price Index (EPI) from the Energy Agency.

Compared to the previous month, household energy prices, however, decreased by a total of 0.5 percent, with electricity and gas becoming cheaper. Prices for heating energy sources such as heating oil, pellets, and firewood, however, rose noticeably.

Especially since the beginning of the year, the electricity price for end customers has increased significantly. The Energy Agency explains this increase mainly due to the elimination of government relief measures ("electricity price brake") and higher network charges. "This effect will disappear with the upcoming turn of the year," it further stated. Compared to the previous month, electricity prices fell by 0.9 percent in September.

Natural gas, however, became 1.9 percent cheaper year-on-year and 1.5 percent cheaper month-on-month. The partly significant increase in network charges for gas nationwide in Austria next year will "influence inflation throughout the entire year," according to the Energy Agency's release.

Fuel Prices Largely Stable

Prices for fuels such as diesel and gasoline remained largely stable both month-on-month and year-on-year. Diesel became 0.1 percent more expensive compared to September 2024, and 1.0 percent cheaper compared to this year's August. The price for gasoline did not change compared to the same month last year, and compared to August, it decreased by 0.5 percent.

The development of prices for solid fuels showed a mixed picture. Wood pellets became 5.7 percent more expensive year-on-year and 2.1 percent more expensive month-on-month. Firewood was 3.9 percent cheaper this September compared to last year, but the price increased by 1.7 percent compared to the previous month.
