The Ski World Championship 2025 starts today in Saalbach. Virtually all races fall within the working hours of employees in Austria.

Michael Trinko, labour law expert of the trade union, answers the most important labour law questions that arise during the World Championship for winter sports fans.

1. Am I Allowed to Watch a Ski Race on TV While at Work?

Principally: No. In most jobs, watching TV at the workplace is neither common nor permitted. But of course, an exception can be made in consultation with the employer.

However, those who work in a place where TV broadcasts are already running, such as in cafes or bars, are naturally allowed to watch. But the work performance must not suffer as a result.

2. What About the Internet - Can I Stream a Race on a Mobile, Tablet or Computer?

If private use of the devices is generally allowed, then one should also be able to take a look at the results ticker in between. However, it is a different matter if one wants to stream an entire race - that is not allowed.

3. Can My Wages or Salary Be Cut If I, for Example, Watch a Race for an Entire Morning?

If you watch or stream despite the ban, the employer may cut your income.

4. Can I Listen to the Radio at Work to Not Miss Anything?

The same applies as with watching TV: If listening to the radio is always allowed, then of course also during the Ski World Cup. But again: Don't get distracted and don't disturb anyone.

5. Can I Toast with a Beer to the Success of My Favourite Skier?

If there is a ban on alcohol in a company, this also applies during sports events. But even if there is no general ban on alcohol, it is always important to remember that you should not drive vehicles, operate machines or perform any other activities under the influence of alcohol and other drugs that could endanger yourself or others.

6. And What If I Just Stay at Home to Watch TV?

Even though the time of the Ski World Cup represents a kind of state of exception for many: Employment law still applies. This means: Holidays must be agreed with the employer and cannot be taken unilaterally. And pretending to be sick when you are healthy is a reason for dismissal.
