Two women aged 29 and 30, and two men aged 27 and 36, all Czech citizens, are suspected of having committed thefts in four grocery stores in Gmünd in the afternoon hours of January 28, 2025.

The accused are believed to have hidden food and luxury goods (alcohol, toiletries, meat and sausage products, sweets and snacks) in a backpack and in the baby tub of a stroller. The cashiers were allegedly distracted and the stores were left without paying for the goods.

Thanks to the statements of an attentive employee and a customer of a supermarket, initial investigations were able to gather both clues about the car used by the perpetrators and their personal description.

Search in Gmünd was Immediately Initiated

A search was immediately initiated involving forces from the Gmünd district police command and the Echsenbach police dog inspection.

At around 3:30 pm, just about 15 minutes after the report was filed, the perpetrator's vehicle was spotted by the police dog patrol and, after a short attempt to escape, was stopped on the LB2 in Vitis, Waidhofen an der Thaya district.

The intervening police officers secured a large amount of stolen goods in the car. The total value amounts to more than 2,900 euros.

All four suspects were temporarily arrested on the spot. After being interrogated at the Gmünd police station, they were admitted to the local prison in Krems an der Donau on the orders of the public prosecutor's office.

Due to the lack of traffic and operational safety of the car used by the suspects, the license plates were removed. The driver will be reported to the responsible district administrative authority.
