Six Fatal Pedestrian Accidents Last Year in Vienna

Last year, 48 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in this country, four less than in 2023, according to the mobility organisation VCÖ, citing figures from the Ministry of the Interior (BMI).

The largest group of victims by far were senior citizens. Two-thirds of the fatalities belonged to the 65-plus generation and three-quarters of fatal pedestrian accidents occurred in urban areas, according to a press release.

Fewer Fatal Pedestrian Accidents

The VCÖ is calling for increased measures nationwide for a senior-friendly and error-tolerant traffic system with more traffic calming and more 30 km/h zones instead of 50 km/h in urban areas. The number of pedestrians who were killed in traffic accidents last year has decreased, but is still high at 48. In 2023, 52 pedestrians lost their lives in road traffic. The lowest number of victims was recorded in 2021 with 37. The VCÖ analysis of BMI data shows that 31 of the 48 fatalities were senior citizens, of which almost half, 14, were 80 years or older. "Our traffic system pays too little attention to the weakest in traffic. We need increased measures for a senior-friendly traffic system," emphasised VCÖ expert Katharina Jaschinsky.

Six Cases in Vienna

In a comparison of federal states, Styria had the highest number of fatally injured pedestrians last year with eleven, in Lower Austria eight pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents, in the state of Salzburg and in Vienna six each, the VCÖ informs. Vorarlberg and Burgenland recorded the lowest number with one fatality each.
