For many people in Austria, the housing situation is increasingly becoming a financial challenge. According to a recent study, two-thirds of the population feel uncertainty or concern regarding their housing costs. The situation is particularly escalating in Vienna.

The representative survey "Is Housing in Austria Still Affordable?" was conducted by immowelt.at in May 2025 and includes 1,000 people aged 16 and over. According to the survey, 30 percent of respondents describe their housing costs as "just barely affordable." For ten percent, the expenses are already critical.

Rental Pressure Increases: Especially Young People and Singles Affected

Especially renters, young people under 40, singles, and single parents are under pressure. This is particularly evident in Vienna: 40 percent of respondents there state that their housing costs are hardly bearable anymore. Among single parents with a child, 37 percent find the burden no longer affordable.

A key factor for financial stability is the type of housing. While 59 percent of Austrians live in ownership, the rest rent – especially in cities. According to the study, owners are significantly less often affected by financial constraints: only seven percent report difficulties in covering their housing costs. Among renters, this proportion is significantly higher.

Concern About Affordable Housing Grows Significantly

Looking ahead to the coming years, uncertainty is also growing: 67 percent of respondents are worried about their housing situation. The greatest fears concern rising living costs (40 percent), followed by rental prices and loan repayments (32 percent). Other factors include energy prices (20 percent), the lack of affordable housing (19 percent), and the absence of age-appropriate housing (14 percent).

According to the study, one-third of respondents currently live worry-free regarding housing – however, for the majority, the topic is long associated with emotional pressure.
