The Task Force Social Benefits Fraud (SOLBE) has again noted an increase in this area of crime for 2024. This increase is attributed, among other things, to enhanced cooperation with partners and media coverage.

In the previous year, a total of 4,865 cases of social benefits fraud were reported, with most (2,626) occurring in Vienna. In 2023, 4,457 cases were reported. According to a release from the Ministry of the Interior on Saturday, the clearance rate was nearly 100 percent.

Targeted Inspections Against Social Benefits Fraud in All Federal States

"When important societal systems are abused, the police and financial authorities take consistent action against the perpetrators. The Task Force Social Benefits Fraud ensures through its investigations that social systems remain fair and available to those who truly need them," said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP). SOLBE targeted inspections took place in all federal states - including as part of the nationwide basic care inspections (GVS), at border crossings, and at Vienna-Schwechat Airport. Since the founding of the TF SOLBE in 2018, a total of 25,156 suspects have been identified and 23,653 reports have been filed. A total damage of around 135.6 million euros was identified. This sum includes both the actual damage already incurred and the damage that could be prevented through ongoing unlawful claims, it was stated.
