A recent survey shows: Three out of four Austrians regularly drink tap water. However, there are concerns about the future quality of drinking water.

For World Water Day on March 22, the opinion research institute Integral, together with the environmental protection organization Global 2000, conducted a survey on the drinking habits of Austrians.

Tap Water Remains Austria's Top Beverage

Tap water is the most consumed beverage in the country at 75 percent. It is particularly popular in the southern federal states of Styria and Carinthia, as well as among people with a high school diploma.

Coffee ranks second with 70 percent, followed by tea (49 percent), mineral and soda water (46 percent), and soft drinks and fruit juices (39 percent). Alcoholic beverages rank at the lower end of the list with 29 percent.

Environmental Awareness and Concern About Water Quality

The high quality of domestic tap water is appreciated by 96 percent of respondents. At the same time, 87 percent are careful to save water in everyday life – especially women value this.

Despite the positive balance, there are also concerns: 55 percent of respondents fear a deterioration in drinking water quality in the future. Already 23 percent currently have concerns that the water could be contaminated with chemicals. The issue of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as "forever chemicals," is particularly well-known: 45 percent of respondents have already heard of it, especially those with higher education.
