Der Strom- und Gasversorger Consolidated Edison prüfte Berichte über austretendes Gas, sagte ein Sprecher des Unternehmens dem TV-Sender CBS. Im Stadtteil Tribeca, wo Freitag früh (Ortszeit) zur Unfallzeit Tausende Menschen arbeiteten oder auf dem Weg zur Arbeit waren, wurden mehrere Gebäude geräumt.
