Stage productions based on two of the best known novels in the world are now on at one of Europe’s most prestigious theatres.
Burgtheater boss Matthias Hartmann directs “Krieg und Frieden”, a theatre play based on Leo Tolstoy’s famous book “War and Peace”. The novel was published in 1869. Its plot laid the groundwork for several television and cinema productions.
The Burgtheater play’s cast includes Stefanie Dvorak, Elisabeth Augustin and “Romeo und Julia” (Romeo and Juliet) star Yohanna Schwertfeger. “Krieg und Frieden” is performed at the Burgtheater’s affiliated Kasino stage this and next month. Moritz Grewenig, Hamid Reza Tavakoli and Harald Trittner are in charge of the production’s video installations.
“Solaris”, a play based on the science fiction novel of the same name by Stanislaw Lem, is currently performed at the Burgtheater’s Vestibül stage. The acclaimed novel has been turned into three films over the decades. A movie by award-winning director Steven Soderbergh (“Ocean’s Eleven”, Contagion”) was on at cinemas in 2002. George Clooney (“Michael Clayton”) and Natascha McElhone (“The Truman Show”) star in the film.
Oliver Masucci, Christiane von Poelnitz and Ignaz Kirchner act in leading roles at the Vestibül. Alexander Wiegold directed the Burgtheater’s “Solaris”. Stefanie Grau designed the stage and Marcus Loran is in charge of the play’s light effects.
“Der ideale Mann”, “Die Liebe zum Nochniedagewesenen” and “Der goldene Drache” are other current Burgtheater productions. Visit www.burgtheater.at or call +43 1 514 444 145 for ticket information.
